I've been, and for a bit will continue to be, slackin' online.

I'm in the midst of moving...

These Soldiers Say 'Over There' Is 'Bogus':
"'People don't act like that when an i.e.d. (improvised explosive device) goes off. They make us look like idiots. We're not idiots!' said a first lieutenant previewing 'Over There,' the new TV series from Steven Bochco ('NYPD Blue,' 'Hill Street Blues') that debuts tomorrow night on FX cable network. "

Figures.

Cigarettes, Taxes and Thin French Women
Mugged by Reality? (Steyn):
"Atta's meetings with Bryant are emblematic: He wasn't a genius, a master of disguise in deep cover; indeed, he was barely covered at all, he was the Leslie Nielsen of terrorist masterminds - but the more he stuck out, the more Bryant was trained not to notice, or to put it all down to his vibrant cultural tradition."

There's that word "vibrant" again, and Steyn, the freakin' GENIUS, puts it exactly in its place.
Anita Hill slams choice of Roberts:
"Hill admits not much is known about Roberts' political ideology, but notes 'his career has been built on membership in increasingly elitist institutions that include few women and Latinos or other ethnic minorities.'

'With O'Connor on the bench, the Supreme Court was the most diverse in its history,' Hill continued. 'If confirmability through the Roberts 'primer' becomes the rule, it is not hard to imagine a return to an all-white-male Supreme Court.

'The nomination process may have become so politicized that the only secure nomination is someone who is an ultimate Washington insider, liked by both sides. If so, it misses a chance to reflect the experiences of the vast majority of Americans. Moreover, a gold standard for judicial selection based on exclusivity appears to contradict the values of ever-expanding opportunities we espouse.'"

Personally I have no opinion on Roberts formed as of yet, but Anita Hill is out of her mind, so much so that she has also torpedoed any shred of credibility she may have once had.
Bomb detonates in man's bag (Cairo):
"Cairo - An explosive detonated as it was being carried by a man several kilometres from a tourist bazaar next to the Pyramids of Giza on Sunday, police said. The man was severely injured, but the blast caused no other casualties."

Premature eruption.

Investigators were trying to determine whether the man, identified as Sami Gamal Ahmad, 33, was taking the explosive to the nearby tourist area of Kerdassa, a bazaar of souvenir shops near the Pyramids, a senior security official involved in the investigation said.

They're beyond the pale where their targets are concerned. Hope you like Hell, Sami. Your choice.

Hiring illegals instead of teens
I'm always taken slightly aback when the lamestream media, in this case Newsday, edges near one of their own third rails.

The uncomfortable reality, as Andrew Sum sees it, is that there's a direct link between the steep national decline in teen employment rates and the growing practice of businesses hiring illegal immigrants and paying them off the books.

The "uncomfortable reality". LOL.

When I'm uncomfortable I actually do something about it. Wonder what it'll take for The Powers That Be to switch positioning...

(At Least) 1 in 4 British Muslims sympathize with terrorists' motives:
"YouGov asked respondents how they feel about Western society and how, if at all, they feel Muslims should adapt to it. A majority, 56 per cent, believe 'Western society may not be perfect but Muslims should live with it and not seek to bring it to an end'.

However, nearly a third of British Muslims, 32 per cent, are far more censorious, believing that 'Western society is decadent and immoral and that Muslims should seek to bring it to an end'."

Canadian National Public Radio Broadcasts Call for State Control of Religion:
"The former professor pitched his idea as a boon to religious freedom. 'We could also help the general cause of religious freedom by introducing a code of moral practice for religions,' he said. 'They will never achieve unity so why not try for compatibility? Can't religious leaders agree to adjust doctrine so all religions can operate within the code?'"
Unfrickinbelievable. Almost.

He's da man.

Conservatives are told it will not be Gonzales:
"The message has filtered out to conservative activists that Gonzales, whom many activists believe would be too liberal on abortion and racial preference issues, is no longer a threat to their cause. That could portend a fierce battle in the Senate in September, as Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) has said Gonzales would be a qualified nominee, suggesting that his selection could have achieved bipartisan consensus."

Oh, now Gonzales is good, but he was bad, earler, for AG.

As always, on the Dim side, it's Happy Hopping Moron Day.

Absolutely, freaking brilliant. Must be read in its entirety.
A soldier's view: The public isn't getting the whole story
It really kills me that the number one complaint of today's serving military is our media. Unbelievable. (Not, I guess.)

Arms blown off, sitting in hospitals, being sent back out -- and their number one complaint is our media.

This makes me boil.

Plague of locusts invades France
New York Post Online Edition: IRAQI MONSTER BLOWS UP KIDS
The following photograph accompanied the print, as well as the online, edition -- but it was black-and-white and blown up large. It pierced me.

It's like a "Guernica" to me, I must paint it -- unless someone else more talented (not difficult) does so. I think I'll start with small detailed studies though...

Other photographs as well lately have cut through the 9-11/Beslan numbness I'd been experiencing -- young soldiers with their loved ones before the good-bye, the sorrow of a courageous SEAL's widow, a woman's whose only son simply boarded a doomed train. Got me all inspired, poetic-like...

Anguish2

Some look at me
Humanity
Mostly still (tho' sometimes moving)
In black-and-white
And sometimes color
(Usually it's the shot before, not the picture after

A smiling man
Lean, sharp, strong, tan
Or timid, humble
Aw, thank you, ma'am)

All eyes hold equal promise

The others, the after snaps
Go well with Taps
Or Amazing Grace on bagpipe played
Harder to see the eyes through tears
Both mine and theirs jointly displayed
Their realities
My fears

Was one to know such grief thus shared?
Before the camera were we spared?
And were we better
Or were we worse
In an infinitely larger universe

When more died and less cared

One death is a tragedy
But a million's a statistic
In a heart gone numb from madness done
This is sad yet realistic

But as a single face
Stares from the paper's page
And one feels the anguish
And feels the rage
And Vengeance seems not rough but sage

Where would we be if no one dared

I've wept as a child, I've cried as a wife
I've sobbed as a mother destroyed by the theft of young life
But
one
at
a
time
When for a moment they're mine
And I can no longer be shielded by the brutal impersonality of large numbers

Some interesting comments, and the pix, on the thread.
Quebec: 'Racist' candy leaves sour taste for blacks:

"The packaging for strawberry-flavoured gummy spiders sold at Couche-Tard convenience stores features a cartoon of a young black man with a gold tooth, earrings and a scowl. On his head is a giant spider whose legs resemble dreadlocks.

'It reinforces stereotypes of black men as aggressive,' said Laurraine Leblanc of Montreal, who is spearheading the campaign with Black Youth in Action and the Black Coalition of Quebec to halt sales of the product. 'And he's linked to a spider, an animal that people don't like very much.'"

Valerie Plame, Nude! [Was today's Slate article inspired by a FR poster?]
TIMESMAN TIPPED OFF TERROR CHARITY: FEDS (NY Times Correspondent Accused):
An old article which mentions Judith Miller.

A FReeper's take on it:

"Well New York Times, which is it going to be?

The term Fourth Estate refers to the press, both in its explicit capacity of advocacy and in its implicit ability to frame political issues. The term goes back at least to Thomas Carlyle.

Fifth Column refers to any clandestine group of people which works covertly inside a nation to undermine its strength (psychological warfare) while the nation is simultaneously suffering an overt attack by a foreign power or another faction in a civil war.

The term was coined by General Emilio Mola in a radio address during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). As a Nationalist general, he sent four army columns to capture Madrid, which was being defended at that time by the Republican forces. The general referred to his hidden supporters inside the capital as his fifth column. The term caught on after the address was widely reported by international media.

War protester sets flag on fire:
"The protester's mother, Barbara Vollick, said her son was trying to make a statement against the war in Iraq, not against the United States.

'He's just a college student being crazy,' she said.

Murrieta police Sgt. Dennis Vrooman said, 'He was basically a one-man demonstration.'

He was trying to get others to join him, Vrooman said, 'but he wasn't getting any cooperation.'

Vollick said her son was upset about President Bush's speech on Iraq last week.

'He's very angry that our young men are dying,' Vollick said.

'He didn't even get to say anything,' she said, alleging that about a half-dozen people attacked him and pulled the flag away. One man punched him in the face, she said.

Vollick said Sunday her son wasn't in any condition to speak with the press. "
Rag-tag army of 1776 should never be forgotten:
"John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail, '...1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival.'

He suggested that it be commemorated, as the 'Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty.'

Furthermore, he said it ought to be celebrated with 'Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward for evermore.'"

Property Ruling Strikes Nerve in House
Great Pelosi quotes herein. She's Dim all right. Whew!

Q Could you talk about this decision? What you think of it?

Ms. Pelosi. It is a decision of the Supreme Court. If Congress wants to change it, it will require legislation of a level of a constitutional amendment. So this is almost as if God has spoken. It's an elementary discussion now. They have made the decision.
