ROTF ::: FOX: Only Statists Could Think ‘Cash for Clunkers’ Is a Success

Great stuff here. (The Peter Schiff quote at the end makes me want to kiss him.)

by Matthew Vadum

Only in Washington, D.C., would the much hyped “Cash for Clunkers” program, which was supposed to run for months but ran out of money in days, be considered a success, Glenn Beck said on his Friday program. (video here)

Politicians are walking on air. Rep. Ed Markey, the Massachusetts Democrat who came up with the idea for the program, proclaimed it to be ”one of the most successful stimulus programs of 2009.” Markey is also leading the charge for another government boondoggle-in-waiting, the potentially catastrophic cap-and-trade system.

Added Beck:

But what really happened here? They had a budget that was supposed to last four months and it lasted just days. So they’re cheering this plan because they gave away free money faster than they anticipated? Great job, guys. Well done. Bravo.

Now lawmakers are pressing on with an expansion of the program, Beck noted. He also said that the government’s website for the program, cars.gov,
offers an ominous warning to would-be users when they try to log on. It reads:

This application provides access to the DoT CARS system. When logged on to the CARS system, your computer is considered a Federal computer system and is the property of the U.S. Government. Any or all uses of this system and all files on this system may be intercepted, monitored, recorded, copied, audited, inspected, and disclosed to authorized CARS, DoT, and law enforcement personnel, as well as authorized officials of other agencies, both domestic and foreign.

“Could it be any more broad and frightening?” said Kimberly Guilfoyle, a Fox News anchor and former prosecutor known for obtaining a conviction in a notorious San Francisco dog-mauling case.

Later in the show, Peter Schiff, president of Euro Pacific Capital said:

Can you think of anything more stupid than taking fully paid for cars that work and paying people to destroy them so that they can borrow more money to buy cars they can’t afford?
